Search Engine Marketing Secrets – Link Popularity: Improve your Search Engine Rankings

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

What is link popularity?

Link Popularity is simply the total number of pages that link to your website. Most search engines, including Google, consider that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote of confidence for the other page. Therefore, the likelihood of you being the best source of information for their searchers is directly linked to the number of votes you have. It is therefore safe to assume that the higher the number of pages linking to your website, the higher you will be ranked on the search engines. Link popularity has become a critical success factor for search engine optimization within popular search engines.

How does link popularity work?

Good link popularity is important because it can boost your rankings within search engines, increasing the number of visitors to your website. There are 3 important factors to keep in mind:

Relevancy

An incoming link is considered to be relevant if it relates to your web page. For example, if you sell office furniture online, relevant incoming links could include: furniture manufacturers, interior designers, competitors in other states or countries, etc.

Keywords

Keywords make the relevancy of your site obvious to the search engines. Make sure that incoming links contain the keywords that best describe your site. For example: Brisbane Office Furniture Sales.

Quality

The quality of links is just as important as the number of links. Only high ranking websites can influence your visibility within search engines. You will be penalized for suspicious looking links from unrelated web pages or too many links from low ranking web pages.

How can I discover my link popularity?

Our Link Popularity Checker: http://www.kintek.com.au/tools/link-popularity-checker.php will show a summary of your link popularity in the four most popular search engines. Alternatively, another easy way to find this out is to type link: followed by your full web address with no spaces, into a search engine and you will receive a list of web sites currently pointing to you.

How can I improve my link popularity?

A few quick tips:

Talk to your suppliers and other related industry partners and arrange to cross link.

Analyse the incoming links you already have and make sure they contain the keywords that best describe your site.

Examine the link popularity of your well ranked competition. Once you discover who’s linking to them, find out if you can get a link to your website as well.

Don’t forget – content is king. Link popularity is only useful if your website already provides relevant, keyword rich, information.

Search Engine Optimization – Pay-Per-Click Advertising and Search Engine Optimization

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

There are pro’s & con’s to both Pay-Per-Click advertising and optimizing for natural search engine traffic.

PPC advertising has many great benefits. First of all, you get your traffic going quickly. I have used this advantage many times. I test new products and even new websites through PPC advertising before making a decision to promote or scrap my new website or product idea.

I am a firm believer in testing new products before throwing large amounts of money into advertising. PPC advertising is a great way to do this. For example, with Google’s Adwords program, you can post your ad, pay a $5 sign-up fee and have highly targeted traffic to your website within an hour. How is that for efficiency?

Also, you can moniter your click charges and stop them before they get too expensive. By the time you have spent your budget on clicks, you should have a pretty good idea of how successful your product is going to be.

I think of PPC advertising as being the most useful when starting a new business or product. WIth PPC advertising, you can quickly and efficiently find out which keywords you need to target and which products are the most popular.

Once that testing period is over, however, it’s time to look into Search Engine Optimization. PPC advertising can be very expensive, costing hundreds, even thousands a month in advertising costs. Once you know what keywords to target, it’s time to put together a plan on how you are going to optimize your website. The drawbacks to search engine optimization is that it requires a lengthy amount of time to get your site to rank high with your keywords. That is why I suggest using this method after the testing period is over, when you already know your business will be profitable.

Search Engine Optimization is definately a slow way to get your website traffic if you plan on not using PPC traffic. It could be a long, expensive road before you even begin selling your product. Search engines can take months, even years to start pulling up high with the search engines. But, natural search engine traffic is definately the best long term way to get the majority of your traffic.

When getting your site to start pulling up in SE natural listings there are 2 main things that need to be done:

  1. Add Content
  2. Add Backlinks

Search engine traffic requires you to submit your site to many different search engines and wait, maybe even months for them to spider your website.

I have had much better luck with another route. You can pay a fee to have your website listed in a very high ranking directory like www.dmoz.com (free), www.yahoo.com’s directory ($299), sbd.bcentral.com (only $50), or another website where your link is on a page that has a page ranking of 4,5,6 or higher. The sites I mentioned above have rankings of 8 or 9. When you have your link on a site with that high of a ranking, the search engines are spidering those sites constantly and will find your website and spider it very quickly. Not only will they find it quickly but because you are linked to a high ranking site, you will also rank higher with the SE.

When looking for backlinks, focus on sites with content related to yours and high page rankings of 4 or higher.

As for content on your site, try to include about 200-500 words of content or text on most of the pages of your site. Text makes your site bulkier. Make sure to integrate all of the keywords you want to target within the content of your site. Don’t worry about cramming the same keywords in over and over. Search engines may possibly even blacklist your site for keyword stuffing, if you try to do that.

There is a lot to know about Search Engine Optimization but, those are the 2 main factors when getting started.

In summary, when starting out, I suggest using PPC advertising for testing products and keywords. Spend time optimizing your site for search engine traffic after you have tested your products and keywords.

Search Engine Secrets – Search Engine Optimization Tips – Part One

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Anybody who has their own website or is involved in business online understands the importance of SEO or search engine optimization. Higher rankings equal more traffic. More traffic equals more potential sales. Simple, eh? Or is it?

The problem here is that most people think search engine optimization is like magic and that only search engine “gurus” have all the answers.

Forunately, for you, this is far from true. In fact search engine optimization is relatively easy. What stops most people from ranking well in the search engines is misinformation and the promise of quick fixes. Every week there’s a new tool or ebook that promises to solve all your search engine woes. There are no quick fixes folks. Accept that as a truth and move forward.

What follows in the next three articles is a 10 step program for improving your online presence and search engine rankings. Enjoy!

Keywords
Keywords should be the first step in your search engine optimization campaign. People put keywords or phrases into search engines looking for information. The search engines then check their index for pages that contain these keywords. Unless your pages contain keywords relevant to your business or service then do not expect search engines to rank you well. It’s that simple.

For example if you have a website about dating then you’ll find it very difficult to rank well for the keyword “dating” because so many other sites are competing for it. However if you were to target a specific area like gay and lesbian dating then you’re dealing with a smaller, more targetted market. You could even regionalize it by targetting gay and lesbian dating in Toronto. See where we’re going with this?

So what keywords tools are available to you? Describing each of them goes beyond the scope of this article so please refer to our site for more information on this topic.

Content
Make this your motto – Provide Useful Content. DO NOT provide keyword stuffed, spammy, automatically generated pages. Write something useful for your visitors based on keywords which are relevant to your business or service.

Ask yourself one question – do you want your website to last? Yes? Great then provide content that’s actually useful to your visitors. Not only should you provide the initial content but keep adding content to your site. A page a week, a page a month it doesn’t matter. Give your visitors a reason to come back to your website.

You can’t write? Yes you can! Most people just think they can’t write. Most of us send emails every day to friends, colleagues and loved ones. If you can compose an email like that then you’re perfectly capable of writing 200 – 300 words of text for a page of content. The mere thought of writing a page of website content can fill people with terror but if you need help on this please refer to our website for a list of resources.

Keyword Density
This is how often your keyword is used on the the page. For example if you have 100 words of text on a single page and you mention your keyword 5 times then your keyword density is 5%.

So what’s the ideal keyword density? Do yourself a favour and don’t focus on keyword density at all. The forums are full of “experts” with theories on the perfect keyword density percentage. Here’s a wake up call – there is no perfect keyword density.

Mention your keyword towards the top of your page within the body text, in the page title and in the Meta Description tag. Apart from that only ever use the keyword or keywords within the page itself as is contextually appropriate. Forcing a keyword into a page over and over again is going to produce a webpage that’s difficult to read and sounds silly.

Domain Name
You have two choices when choosing a domain name. You can use a branded name that doesn’t relate to your business e.g. Amazon.com have built a hugely successful brand name as an online retailer using the name of a South American river for their company. It just works for some reason.

Your other choice is to use a keyword rich domain name. What this means is that if your website is about baby clothes you’d use a domain name like www.baby-clothes-guide.com. Should you really use hyphens to separate the keywords in the domain? The simple answer is yes because a search engine can read each individual keyword in the domain.

If you were to use www.babyclothesguide.com the major search engines can only read the first word from it which is “baby”. Therefore it has no idea that the domain is specifically about baby clothes (targetted) and not just about baby (untargetted).

Marketing Secrets – Internet Marketing For Sales Leads

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

Copyright 2005 Mike Law

NO matter what business you are trying to build online, you will need sales leads if you are ever going to make sales, and sales leads are what you are trying to generate if you are marketing on the internet. In order to survive, any web site needs a steady flow of qualified leads.

The aim of any lead generation campaign is to build your mailing list. Internet marketers often say “the money is in the list”, which is totally true. A list of responsive buying customers that trust you is worth its weight in gold!

While spam filtering has lessened the impact of email marketing, its still a viable means to getting your sales messages out there. In theory, email is marketing is free, although of course its costs you in terms of your time. The theory behind email marketing is that by using a “hook” such as a free product or some other incentive, you can “funnel” interested parties onto specific products and services.

When you consider generating leads via an email campaign there are basically three avenues you can explore: email signatures, joint ventures and safe lists. One word of warning though, and that is avoid spam at all cost, one spam complaint can seriously damage your online business. You should familiarize yourself with the laws concerning spam, and at the very least ensure you include a un-subscription link in ALL your marketing emails. Due to spam, it is advisable that you avoid buying leads, no matter how reputable the company, buying leads can easily lead to a spam complaint, you have been warned!

In its simplest form, email marketing is a matter of putting a signature in all your emails that contains a link to your main product.

If you are looking to vastly increase your list quickly then a joint venture (JV) may well be the key you need. In its simplest form, in a JV you supply the product and a fellow marketer supplies the leads and you share the profits. Hopefully, you will then get the emails of your fellow marketers customers, so you can then mail them with further offers.

When considering a joint venture there are many considerations you have to think about, but the main one, before you consider contacting anyone about mailing to their list, is “what’s in it for THEM”, not “what’s in it for me”. NEVER write to a fellow marketer unless you can offer them something of value in return for their help, and that is not necessarily just a share of the profits, be inventive!

Finally you have safe lists. A safe list is a list of people that have agreed to receive marketing emails in return for being able to send their own marketing email. The value of this form of marketing has never been that good. After all you are trying to sell to people who are only interested in selling to you!

You can use pay per click advertising such as overture or Goggle adwords to advertise your site and draw in interested leads.

One other highly effective way of generating interested leads is posting in forums that are related to your area of business. Include a link to your site in your signature and people interested in your sphere of business will often click it if your forum post was interesting.

Three other popular sales lead generation techniques are submitting articles to ezine publishers and article directories, press releases and testimonials for products in your target market.

No matter what lead generation technique you employ you will need a way to capture your leads email address when they arrive at your site.

The traditional method has been to use a pop up or pop under which contains some incentive to get someone to sign up. With the invention of pop up stoppers their effectiveness has dwindled and therefore unstoppable pop ups (also know as hover ads or slide in ads) have evolved. This new generation of pop ups are built into your webpage and as such cannot be stopped. Simply do a search on Goggle for “unstoppable pop up” and you are sure to find a software solution to produce these types of pop ups for you.

The other alternative is to use what is called a “name squeeze page”.

In essence a name squeeze page is a web page whose sole purpose is to capture an email address.

They generally contain a small amount of information about the product or service you are selling as a “teaser” for the reader and will contain a sign up form, with a message like “to find out more simply fill in the form to be immediately directed to further details on this amazing product”.

A name squeeze page not only helps build your list, this information can also be used with certain software to help personalize your site for your visitor, a technique that has been shown to increase sales. Again, simply do a search for name squeeze page generators.

No matter how you generate sales leads there is one thing always to bear in mind, and that is to be effective your leads must be in your targeted market. If, for example, you are selling internet marketing products, then it’s no use advertising on a site that is all about scuba diving!

When you start to build your online business, ensure you include a well thought out sales lead generation strategy from the beginning. Do not make it an afterthought; this should be in place from the very beginning if you want your business to be a success.

Search Engine Marketing Secrets – Creative Marketing Tips Simple Things You Can Use In Your Business To Attract More Clients

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

The single most important activity you can do in your small business is create a unique marketing strategy and plan. When was the last time you saw a company marketing themselves in an outrageous way? In this day and age it looks like everyone has read the same book on marketing and sorry to say that book doesnt work!

What does work is a little creativity, a little personality and a lot of effort to make yourself so different from your competition that there is no real competition.

1. What crazy stunts could you do to get free media publicity? What type of outrageous challenge could you post to the public (ie give me 30 days and we will change your life, your business, your appearance etc) Alternatively, go get a Guinness Book Of Records find something that is remotely related to your business and design a new record you are going to create the media will love you.

2. Whats your stadium pitch? Imagine this…you have been given the chance to do a 60 second presentation to 50,000 people in a stadium. Just as you walk out to start the presentation they announce that people dont have to stay if they don’t want. What could you say in 15 seconds to get them to stay? What could you say in 60 seconds to convince them that your company is the only alternative and theyd be crazy not to build a relationship with you?

3. Think about the lifetime value of your clients. When they are first introduced to you they are buying into a relationship with you they are NOT buying a product. It is up to you to nurture that relationship. Are you? If you treat them right and make them feel like family your clients will come back buy more and buy more often. In todays cold impersonal business world, be the one that treats them like family.

4. Find a way to build a recurring payment plan around your business. If you have a one-time purchase of your product what could you offer to your clients to have them come back more often? Could you do a tune-up or clean up or re-design once a year? Rather than waiting for them to come in offer them a reminder service and a monthly enticement to come back in. Bill them monthly, quarterly or yearly. Up to 50% (sometimes more) of your clients will take this option what would that add to your bottom line?

5. Create joint ventures with other related businesses anyone that deals with the same target market that you do. Explain to them that you will send them extra business if they give your clients an incentive to buy (coupons, discounts, bonuses etc). Create a booklet that you will give out to your clients with all these discounts. For every discount coupon they use – that supplier is to pay you $xx dollars for the new client you brought them

6. Send out a weekly (even bi-weekly) email newsletter with some tips, some humor, some specials of the week. On the days when it is going to rain – send out an urgent bulletin – rainy day special! Offer them a deal to come down, brave the rain and get a deal on lunch

7. Make doing business with you more exclusive. Make it on a referral-only basis. There is a dentist I know of that locks his door. You are not allowed in unless one of his present clients has recommended you even then you need to pass the approval process. And he has 3 times more profit (and much happier clients) than any other dentist in his city.

8. Test all of your crazy ideas. No matter how crazy they sound – try it out. Find out which ones work. Then optimize how effective they are. Test all variations of that idea. Find out which variation works best.

9. Use risk reversal in your offer. Make it so your clients come out so far ahead by dealing with you they would be silly not to. Even if they decide that your product is not for them and they return it – they still come out of the deal with the refund and many bonuses that they never had before dealing with you. The stronger the risk reversal and the longer the guarantee the fewer number of returns and complaints its a fact.

Think differently, be different, make sure people notice you are different – and you will be very profitable. To your success!

Search Engine Secrets – 5 Keys to Copywriting for Site Visitors and Search Engines

Sunday, June 25th, 2006

When it comes to writing your Web site copy, you must balance the needs of your target audience with search engine optimization. Here are the 5 keys to help you succeed with both site visitors and search engines.

1. Comprehension and Attention Span

Assume your site visitors must understand the primary benefit you offer them in 30 seconds or they’ll be gone. This most important benefit must be in your headline.

A strong, enticing headline is the single element of your Web copy you cannot live without. Studies show the right headline can increase response to an offer exponentially – and, only one in five people get beyond the headline to read the rest of the text.

2. Format and Layout

Short copy blocks will serve you well, highlighted by bullet points, keyword-rich links, and subheadlines.

Multiple, specific subheadlines create immediate context when a visitor is exploring your site. Make sure they can always see at least one headline on the screen. Like magazine index headlines, they are summaries of what is to come.

3. Write for Your Readers

Readers of Web copy (in English) most often start in the upper right hand corner, drop their eyes toward the bottom of the page, and then ascend to the upper left. The order in which they read is:

a. Headline b. Subheadlines c. PS d. Price (or order pg) e. Actual Text

Which means, all of these elements must be present.

Above all, write to the needs of your audience. Put yourself in their place and ask: “What’s in this site for me?” That’s what they really want to know, regardless of whether you are marketing or simply delivering information.

The next two elements are to do with writing for the search engines.

4. Keyword-Rich Copy and Theme Indexing

Determine what keywords or keyphrase your entire site is about – a keyphrase people use often on the search engines. To pick heavily searched, popular keyphrases, try WordTracker: wordtracker.com.

Write your entire site around this keyphrase for powerful ‘theme indexing’, a process used by search engines to determine an entire site’s primary theme.

Theme indexing search engines include Altavista, Google, Excite, Lycos and Webcrawler. Each in their own unique way evaluates your site using your page titles, meta keywords, the description tag, page headlines, general content and links. Which means, your keyphrase must be present in each.

5. Word Placement on the Page

Search engines read from the top of the page down in the HTML code, or roughly from the upper left to the lower right of your visible text. Therefore, it’s in your best interest to use a keyword-rich phrase in the upper left corner of your Web page.

Use your primary keyphrase in the first 25 words on your page. Use keyword-rich hyperlinks.

Seek a balance of 3-7% keyword-density. Check this before you submit pages with the free Keyword Density Analyzer: Keyworddensity.com. Better yet, check your top competitors for an exact read on what specific search engines are really looking for.

Words power the Web. Following these 5 basic steps will help you use your Web words to maximum advantage.

Marketing Secrets – Internet Marketing Tip – Go For The Bronze

Sunday, June 25th, 2006

Go for the bronze.

Repeat…go for the bronze.

That’s right, NOT the gold.

Lets look at this another way. If you are learning how to read, will you start off by reading difficult philosophy?

Certainly not! You will begin by reading short, simple books with small words.

Lets apply this to your Internet Marketing career.

Too many times I have seen Internet Marketers trying to “Go for the gold” when they are simply not ready to do so.

If I may steal a line from one of my favorite movies, “What about Bob?” you must take baby steps.

The Internet Marketing field is HUGE…

…so you must make a choice.

Pick a part of it that you are the most interested in, or know the most about. Become an expert in this area, whether it be graphic creation, opt-in list building, writing articles, or something as simple as creating a great headline.

I have seen eBooks that teach only how to create a great headline sell quite well.

Once you are an expert in this field, it’s time to expand. Pick another field related to the first one and research.

Remember, baby steps.

It is your quickest path to success.

Search Engine Marketing Secrets – Affiliate Marketing Pros and Cons

Saturday, June 24th, 2006

Want an online business with a win-win opportunity for both the merchant and the publisher? Try investing your money, time and effort in affiliate marketing business and be overwhelmed by the profit youll get out of it. It has been written in almost all articles about affiliate marketing that it is among the greatest ways to earn money online.

However, let me just remind you that it also has its downside. The old adage that says nothing in this world is perfect is also true in online marketing business. And thats the reason why this page is created – to give you the affiliate marketing pros and cons.

Lets start with the pros.

To the Merchant. Affiliate marketing offers the merchant a wider place to sell their product and services. More websites will naturally provide you more customers and will create more sales. This is particularly true if the sites that you have chosen are in their niche marketing.

The only thing thats left for the merchant to do is to look for affiliate sites where your merchandise is a good fit and where your target customers usually visit. Another advantage that a merchant can get from affiliate marketing is that they can gain more and more customers without spending valuable time in searching out for them. The banner ads on your affiliate website might draw interest and drive the visitor to click on your website. Also, different consumers coming from various websites can provide the merchant a good idea regarding consumer trends and demands.

To the Affiliate Marketer. This kind of business has proved to be an easy way to create additional income for their website. The marketing banners that they stuffed under content help in making their site look good. And these banners may create instant sales wherein, they can get a commission.

Above all, the affiliate can have extra income from his or her website without investing something in making his own product and without worrying about customer support, book keeping, and ecommerce. Here in affiliate marketing, the merchant handles it all. The affiliate just needs to promote and resell the product.

To the Customers. The benefit that a customer could get out of affiliate marketing is obvious they get an answer to their problem that they may not have found without the help of the affiliates website. Thats if, and only if the merchandise or service gives what it says it will.

Thats how advantageous affiliate marketing is. But lets be aware that this online business also have some disadvantages. Just like any other businesses, this one also involves shady and even illegal practices. And we feel the need to share it with you.

To the Advertisers/Merchants. The merchant may suffer from high commission costs as well as costly set up and maintenance fees that are usually caused by lots of affiliate facilitators. And sometimes the affiliates engage in false advertising and misleading the customer in order to get commission. This means that some affiliates sometimes make claims and promises regarding the product and services which are completely wrong or they extremely exaggerate it. When this happen, the merchant usually suffers complaints and they definitely lose potential consumer.

To the Publisher/Affiliates. Sometimes unscrupulous and dishonest merchants just close down programs without informing the affiliates. And worse, they leave without paying commissions. There are also some merchants who attract new affiliates by promising high commissions then after a week or two, they dramatically drop those commission rates. Aside from that, when hijackers interfere, affiliates typically dont get just commission, it goes to the hijacker instead.

Moreover, the shady and illegal practices involved in this kind of business include false advertising, unlawful use of trade names, logos, or other branding, spamming and hijacking.

In spite of those disadvantages, affiliate marketing is still considered as one of the best ways to make money online. We just have to understand that in any thing that human do, especially if money is involved, there will always be cheaters and people who will be engaged in illegal means. And you shouldnt be one of them. Keep in mind that it is always right and advisable to act ethically and legally; work hard to make your customers and business partners trust you and always see to it that you go beyond your customers expectations.
